Great Lakes Workforce Quality Initiative
Overview
The Great Lakes Governors want to ensure that emerging, existing,
and transitional workers in their states have the skills necessary
to compete and thrive in today’s economic marketplace, while
maintaining the region’s competitive edge. In July 1997, as
part of the Workforce Quality Initiative, they announced the creation
of the Great Lakes Guarantee, a portable, regional endorsement of
state or national industry skill standards. New metalworking skills
developed by the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS)
were the first skills recognized under the Guarantee.
