Great Lakes Water Resource Managers Initiative
Great Lakes Water Resource Managers Initiative
Overview
In April 2009, the Council of Great Lakes Governors launched the Great Lakes Water Resource Managers Initiative. Through the Initiative, the Council and project partners including the Great Lakes States, Provinces and The Nature Conservancy will assess and develop tools to measure and manage water use impacts. Specifically, partners have developed an information toolkit and resource materials for State and Provincial managers. Additionally, the States and Provinces will create a regional process and tools for performing Basin-wide cumulative water use impact assessments. These assessments will drive future resource management decisions including any changes to the decision-making standard used by the States and Provinces.
The Initiative will assist the Great Lakes States and Provinces meet commitments in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Sustainable Water Resources Agreement
(Article 209) and the Great Lakes—St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact (Section 4.15).
