Great Lakes Recycle
Great Lakes Executive Transportation Conference:
Secondary Materials in Highway Construction
November 12-13, 1998
Harrisburg, PA
Great Lakes Recycle, a project of the Council of Great Lakes Governors,
has joined with the Federal Highway Administration and the Pennsylvania
Transportation Institute to organize the Great Lakes Executive Transportation
Conference: Secondary Materials in Highway Construction.
The objective of this conference is to bring together Chief Highway
Engineers and Environmental Agency Representatives from the Great
Lakes states to define regional solutions and direct future implementation
for the use of foundry sand, glass and coal fly ash in highway construction.
The Great Lakes region is one of the largest producers of these
materials in the nation, with more than 30 million tons a year being
disposed of in landfills. By developing common specifications, and
by discussing environmental considerations, guidelines for use,
and quality assurance procedures, the Great Lakes states can lead
the country in the use of economical, high-quality recycled and
secondary materials in highway construction.
The conference will open with an introduction to secondary materials
from the perspectives of industry, the Federal Highway Administration,
and the Environmental Protection Agency. The afternoon agenda for
the first day includes case study presentations and discussions
on the quality control considerations for the use of foundry sand,
glass and coal fly ash in highway construction.
The second day of the conference will focus on the experiences
of the Great Lakes states in addressing technical standards and
specifications, environmental considerations, and the implementation
of secondary materials in highway construction
