The Brownfields Project

Overview

In 1996, under the direction of Governor Tom Ridge of Pennsylvania, The Brownfields Project was initiated to promote the voluntary cleanup and redevelopment of contaminated properties in the Great Lakes region. State and Provincial partners built on their individual successes to collectively eliminate barriers, streamline programs, and provide incentives for brownfields redevelopment. The project concluded with the 1998 publication of A Blueprint for Brownfields Redevelopment, a resource document that contains best practices, State and Provincial brownfields programs, and relevant contact information.

Accomplishments

  • Publication for A Blueprint for Brownfield Redevelopment. This July 1998 publication presents a range of innovative strategies and practical solutions regarding the cleanup and redevelopment of brownfield sites around the region. Included in this resource are  case studies,  ideas that work, state and provincial brownfield program overviews, and a directory of agency-level technical issue experts.
  • Creation of ROBIN (Regional Online Brownfields Information Network) Created in partnership with the Great Lakes Commission, ROBIN is an innovative Internet consortium that links to state and provincial brownfield programs as well as to the online resources of local and federal government, business/industry, research institutions, and community organizations within and beyond the Great Lakes region. ROBIN is located at  www.glc.org/projects/robin/robinhome.html
  • Regional Contract for Remediation Database. Through the cooperative efforts of the Council of Great Lakes Governors and Remedial Technologies Network, L.L.C. (RTN), the Great Lakes states and provinces now have access to one of the most comprehensive online research libraries of remediation strategies and techniques. RTN, in conjunction with the Research Triangle Institute, created this system, the  Remediation Information Management System (RIMS), to provide a one-stop repository for remediation information. RIMS presents summaries of cleanup technologies as well as case studies, third party evaluations, peer review articles, scientific studies, and technical and cost reports.
