The Auto Project
Overview
In 1991, under the direction of Governor John Engler of Michigan,
the Council worked with
The Chrysler
Corporation, Ford
Motor Company, General
Motors Corporation, and the American Automobile Manufacturers
Association to reduce the generation of persistent toxins in auto
making. Since the car companies began to operate this program on
an individual basis in 1995, car companies reduced discharges of
Great Lakes persistent toxins by nine percent, Toxic Release Inventory
substances by 57 percent and Industrial Toxics Program substances
by 64 percent. The automakers now independently continue their pollution
prevention efforts.
