Great Lakes Biomass State Regional Partnership

Joint Letter sent to Congress in Support of National Bionergy Partnershp

On April 4, 2008, Council of Great Lakes Governors' Chair Governor Doyle joined the Chairs of the Coalition of Northeastern Governors, the Southern States Energy Board, and the Western Governors' Association and sent a joint letter in support of authorization of the National Bioenergy Partnership. This vital program, which the Council of Great Lakes Governors manages for the Great Lakes region, builds on a collaborative of five successful regional biomass energy programs created by Congress and the Department of Energy 25 years ago. Federal authorization of this program will strengthen this federal-state-private partnership that recognizes the regional nature of energy resources and works cooperatively to address opportunities and barriers to the regional energy markets. This Partnership is uniquely designed to offer timely and effective support for expanded biomass development by building public and private sector networks; leveraging federal, state, and private resources; and providing technical assistance, citizen outreach and education.

GOVERNORS RENEW CALL TO ENACT GREAT LAKES PROTECTIONS

The eight Great Lakes Governors today renewed their call to State legislators to take the steps needed to protect the region's most valuable asset, the Great Lakes. Specifically, the Governors adopted a resolution again urging swift enactment of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact (compact) and rejected calls for renegotiations which will only serve to weaken the protections that they endorsed more than two years ago. The Governors issued a clear statement decrying recent proposals to upset the delicate compromise among diverse and varied interests in support of protecting the Great Lakes through the compact.

GREAT LAKES GOVERNORS CHALLENGE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES TO PROTECT AND RESTORE THE LAKES

On November 8, 2007, Governor Jim Doyle, Chair of the Council of Great Lakes Governors, today called on each Democratic and Republican presidential candidate to support protecting and restoring the Great Lakes.

In a letter sent on behalf of the region’s Governors, Doyle challenged the candidates to forge a new partnership with the Governors to protect and restore our nation’s water belt—the Great Lakes.  Governor Doyle has spearheaded State and regional efforts but it is recognized that accelerated progress can only be made with greater federal support, particularly from the next Administration.
