On December 12-13, 2005 the Council of Great Lakes Governors held its 2005 Leadership Summit in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Before an audience of over 200 people, the Great Lakes Governors and Premiers signed the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Sustainable Water Resources Agreement to implement the Great Lakes Charter Annex. The Governors also urged their State legislators to quickly ratify the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact. These agreements update the way we manage the Great Lakes by prohibiting long-distance diversions, jumpstarting conservation efforts and creating a long-term means to better protect the Great Lakes.
Bill Testa, Vice President and Director of Regional Programs at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago; and Bob Stempel, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Energy Conversion Devices, Inc., Chairman, Council of Great Lakes Industries, (Retired) Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, General Motors Corporation spoke about the economic challenges facing our region and how we can stimulate sustainable development.
Finally, Ohio Governor Bob Taft, who had served as Chair of the Council since June 2001 and Co-Chair with Governor Doyle since July 2004, stepped down as Chair. The Governors through a unanimous vote elected Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle to serve as Chair of the Council of Great Lakes Governors. Thank you again to all of those who made the Council of Great Lakes Governors' 2005 Leadership Summit the success that it was. We look forward to your continued involvement and support as the Council's Governors and Premiers work together to ensure the continued environmentally sound economic development of the Great Lakes region.
